Unconscious Bias (Examples from Workshop)

"Female-named hurricanes are more deadly than male hurricanes b/c ppl don't take them as seriously. And they don't evacuate and die."

"Black people are more likely to die in hospitals b/c doctors aren't great at reading their cues of pain or take their words as valid."

"If you see a messy desk and you're told it's a man's, the owner is more likely to be considered brilliant. If the messy desk is attributed to a woman then the owner is seen as messy and confused."

"You see white kid in a hoodie you are more likely to think of them as cool. If you see a black teenager in a hoodie, white ppl are more likely to see them as a threat. And the baggy clothing that is predominant in teen male culture takes on different connotation of cool or dangerous."

"White sounding names triggered 50% more callbacks for a job than Black sounding names with the exact same resumes."

"Two factors to hiring is likability and competent. And usually women can not be both in the eyes of men. They are either competent (and a bitch) or likable and not serious."

"Black women are THE single most educated demographic in the United States and they earn 61 cents to every dollar a white man earns."

"These are mostly cognitive failings and don't always point to moral failing. But they must be changed. And we can."

"The largest wealth gap is between white men and black women...who are usually more educated but seen as less likable."
